Trampled by Turtles: Alone
Steve Carell for me was always the lovable goofball who almost embodied the essence of a human “dad joke” through his roles in The 40 Year Old Virgin and as the spectacular Michael Scott. It was with great intrigue that I went to see The Way Way Back a coming of age summer movie where he was being billed as a villainous antagonist. Could he pull it off, would it be possible, or would a “That’s what she said” be lurking just under neath the surface. Suffice it to say he pulled it off brilliantly but it wasn’t his performance that stayed with me as I left the theater. It was the song from the seminal scene at the end of the movie where the first words sung sum up the feelings of the teenage protagonist who has resolved his own loneliness perfectly “you come into the world alone, and you go out of the world alone, but in between there’s you and me, oh”.
